Social Media Mom's Celebration: Day 2

Day number two at the Social Media Moms Celebration began bright and early with a breakfast with Guy Kawasaki. Going into this session, I didn't know much about Guy other than the fact that he was kind of a big deal on Twitter and is the co-founder of Alltop. Guy was very personable and actually very funny. Our session was very relaxed yet very informative. He demonstrated to us how he uses Twitter as a business tool. He cited example after example how Twitter can be used by small business and large businesses alike to reach people and drive them to your site. He also helped to dispel some myths and "rules" about how twitter "should" be used. The main take away part of this session is to tweet things with substance. Stopping talking about "how the lines at Starbucks are long" and start tweeting content..."interesting" content.

Breakfast with Guy
Following breakfast we were fortunate enough to attend a celebration for the Give a Day Get a Day volunteers.

Disney is celebrating the contributions people make when they volunteer, said Tom Staggs, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.

“Volunteering weaves together the fabric of a community and reinforces the best of who we are,” Staggs said. “With „Give a Day, Get a Disney Day,‟ we hope to inspire a million people to engage in community volunteerism, and we‟re well on our way to that goal.”

To enable people to sign up for an eligible volunteer project, Disney is working with HandsOn Network, the nation‟s largest volunteer network. Part of Points of Light Institute, HandsOn Network has 250 on-the-ground volunteer action centers across the country and connects volunteers to more than 70,000 nonprofit agencies that need their help.
The highlight of the event was the unveiling of the "World's largest structure of canned food." But who else could announce this big reveal...but Ty Pennington from Extreme Home Makeover. Once unveiled, this massive structure was disassembled following the event and was distributed to local food banks in the Orlando and surrounding areas.

Planning a vacation to Orlando this year? You too can sign up to Give a Day Get a Disney Day!

After the morning sessions were over...families were given some free time together. We of course we hit up the Magic Kingdom again! A huge perk that Disney provided the conference attendees was a Media Fast Pass. This little golden ticket gained us instantaneous access to rides that offered a Fast Pass. Typical Fast passes assign you a time to come back and ride the attraction. Our Media Fast Pass printed out the current we essentially got to walk right on. These little cards were worth their weight in gold!

Dinner that evening was at Epcot. The forecast was for cold temperatures....and we were feeling a little iffy about going to an outdoor party. But, Disney had it all under control. Upon arriving at Epcot, they had glow stick for the kids and hand warmers for everyone. They also had outdoor heaters placed throughout the venue. The food! Oh, the food! Being at Epcot, they had a huge variety of food from all countries...and it was DELICIOUS!
Our Family at Epcot

Following dinner we were treated to a performance from Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato. The part that cracked me up was Grace didn't have a clue who either of these people were....if she were 5 years older...she would have been goo goo! She had a blast dancing around with her new friend Ellis and playing limbo under the ropes. As it turns out...Disney is an energy zapper for poor Gauge. He passed out during the middle of the concert.

The best part of the evening was getting to sit down at dinner with Pam and her family and get to know them better. She is so sweet and I feel like I have known them FOREVER! Now, if only we didn't live 900 miles away from each other :-(

Social Media Moms Celebration: Day 1

Wednesday morning we woke up bright and early to begin our trip over to the Polynesian. I wanted to pick up my conference packet so we could begin planning our week at Disney. After picking up the packet and a really nice swag bag of goodies...we headed on over to Disney's Beach Club Resort and Cape May Cafe for breakfast with the characters.

We were not sure how the kids would react to the characters. Grace was really into it and ready to give out hugs and pose for pictures. Gauge was a little more apprehensive. It took him a while to get warmed up. At one point, Goofy was visiting the table behind us and Gauge thought he should be getting the undivided attention. He kept saying really loudly "HEY, WHAT'S THE BIG IDEA?" If you have ever watched Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, you know that's one of Donald Duck's lines.

When Donald came around, we thought for sure Gauge would like him since he's always stealing his one liners. Well.....we were wrong. As soon as Gauge got close to Donald...the character made a duck noise to him. That was it!! Gauge flipped out and wouldn't go near him. He kept saying "He bocked at me!" LOL
Scared of Donald

After breakfast we headed back on over to the Polynesian to check and see if by chance our room was ready early. We didn't get that instead we decided to walk around and check out the resort.

As we got near the back of the resort we noticed a boat dock and decided to take a stroll out and check out the view. A boat was waiting there and the gentlemen asked us if we wanted to take a ride. He makes his way around to the Grand Floridian, The Magic Kingdom and back to The Polynesian. We decided why not?

Once it reached The Magic Kingdom....Shawn said "I have our tickets. Do you want to go in and check it out since we have some time to kill?" So, that's exactly what we did. No stroller, totally inappropriate walking shoes (for Mommy) we went in.

We had so much fun! We posed in front of Cinderella's Castle, rode the Teacups, drove race cars, and even got to see Minnie and Mickey! We raced around the Magic Kingdom on a mission to squeeze in as much fun as we could in 3 hours. Around 4pm we headed back to the resort to get checked in and get ready for dinner.

Dinner that evening was scheduled to be at ESPN Wide World of Sports. Buses transported all the families over to ESPN.

Once we arrived, they had the bloggers head into "The Milk House" for a presentation about some super cool things coming up at Disney. Meanwhile the families got to enjoy playing some soccer on the soccer field and munch on popcorn and hot chocolate to tide them over till dinner.

Some of the exciting news coming out of Disney that I'm excited to share with you is:
* The Fantasy Land Expansion - For the first time, guests will be able to step into their favorite Disney fairy tales to have more magical and immersive encounters with Disney princesses. Each princess will have her own themed village within Fantasyland Forest.
* Makeover of Castaway Cay - Disney’s private island paradise in the tropical waters of the Bahamas, is getting an extra dose of pixie dust. Enhancements include an expanded family beach, a floating water platform featuring two twisting water slides, two fresh-water play areas for guests to cool off, a new teen retreat and 20 new private rental cabanas offering the ultimate in beachside luxury. The additional island amenities are scheduled to be complete by summer 2010.
* Disney Cruise Line - The Walt Disney Company is expanding its successful cruise vacation business by adding two new ships, Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, to set sail in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Two decks taller than the existing Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, the new 1,250-passenger liners will more than double the passenger capacity for Disney Cruise Line.

Following our informational session we all headed in for dinner. Can I just say WOW!!! It was over the top. Tons of food, tons of dancing, tons of music. The kids had a blast. We got to be entertained by the cast of High School Musical. Grace danced her little heart out on the stage.

ESPN Party

Gauge didn't want to be too far away from we went back upstairs and enjoyed some Mickey Mouse ice cream together!

We had such a fun evening together. Following dinner we boarded the buses back to The Polynesian to get rested up for Day #2 of The Social Media Mom's Celebration.

Disclosure: I was sponsored by Avitae to attend this conference. As an attendee I also received complimentary items, special discounts, and other exciting benefits such as food and entertainment, so my family and I could experience the magic of Walt Disney World.

Universal Studios & Islands of Adventure

With my conference starting on Wednesday...that allowed us to have another day together in Orlando to have fun as a family. A High School classmate of mine who now lives in Florida mailed us 4 tickets to Universal Studios that she was unable to use. We were very grateful for this gift. What a blessing. To top it off...the hotel that we were staying in provided a free shuttle service to and from the park. So we woke up bright and early Tuesday morning to hop on the shuttle to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure.

Universal Entrance

I love all of the city streets at Universal. In addition to taking in all of the scenery.
Universal Buildings

We got to ride a lot of rides. Both of the kids were so brave. Some of the rides we went on were Twister, Shrek, and Jaws. As you can see...Gauge and I barely made it out alive!

We realized that the tickets she provided us were not only good at Universal Studios but Islands of Adventure as well. Shawn and I had never been there we thought we would go check it out. We all instantly fell in love with Suess Landing! It was as if all of the Dr. Suess books had come alive!
Suess Landing: Family

My favorite ride was a train that you got on and it went above all of the Suess buildings and told Suess stories as you rode!

Despite the gloomy rainy weather...we made the best of it, and had a blast!

Having Fun?

February 17, 2010

We have arrived!

We were not sure exactly when we would arrive in Orland so we decided not to book a hotel in advance. As we neared the city, we found this really cool shopping area that reminded us of Easton Town Center. We decided to get out the laptop and try and tap into a wi-fi connection. Staples popped up so we pulled closer to their store and tapped in. We booked a 4 star hotel via Hot Wire. It ended up being the Crowne Plaza Orlando Universal. We had a great experience with Crowne Plaza last summer.

The view from our room was Amazing!

As with any hotel...the kids {LOVED} playing on the beds. The ones at the Crowne Plaza are especially cozy!

Since we didn't have any plans until the following day. We decided to explore the hotel..

and take a dip in the pool by moonlight. Shawn took the kids in (too chilly for me) while I decided to sit poolside with a Margarita.
