Google Reader Killed the Blog Comment!

I can still remember the very first blog that I ever read and how is subsequently led me to another, then another, then before I knew it was creating a blog of my own.

It was February 2007 and I was surfing the internet one day and came upon the blog 4tunate. I quickly became fascinated with this mom's journey of raising quadruplet boys. I then began reading some of the comments on one of her posts. One comment was from Kate at My Life as a Mom.  So I started reading Kate's blog....This led me to a few of her friend's blogs. Shelly at Life as We Know It (who has recently become a contributor over at my review blog Peanut Butter and Pickle Reviews), and also found Brittany at 4 Little Men & Girlie Twins. And you can't forget the blogs that I have learned about due to them being in my BlogHer rotation. I have met Kerry at Just Us Gibsons. Who did the sweetest thing last summer when Gauge turned 1. She knew by reading my blog that he was having a Monkey party and mailed me an adorable Monkey bank.

Then there are countless others that I have found along the way. I use to visit each of them individually to read their latest post. I would usually leave a comment.....but then something happened. I opened up a Google Reader account. I could now read all of my favorite things in one place. Then I got lazy with my comments. Since I wasn't going to their site, I wasn't leaving comments anymore.  That is why I believe that Google Reader has Killed the Blogger Comment.

I think that it has become true on my site as well. I don't get very many comments, but I love reading the few that I do get. I'm going to try better y'all to actually visit your sites and leave comments. I would love if you would do the same for me.  So...that is why I'm calling for an unofficial De-Lurk.  Don't let Google Reader make you lazy like it has done to me.  Comment away.....you just never know who you might meet :-)

  1. Google reader may have killed the blogger comment, but Firefox brought it back. A few modifications and you should be back in business.

  2. Great post!

That is why I don't use Google Reader. Hopefully, those who have fallen to the "Reader" will come back and leave comments:)

  3. I have to admit, I get a little lazy with the comment love too since using the Google Reader. My problem is I dont go thru it often enough and get overwhelmed. I took this weekend to clean out over 300 entries!! My eyes hurt!

  5. I am right there with you. I didn't start adding to my reader until just a few months ago, and was leaving comments left and right...now, nope...not nearly as much, but am trying. :)

I got hooked on blogging just like you. didn't even know what blogland was about last year. :)

  9. Well Google Reader hasn't killed it for me, cause I don't use it! I've just been terrible at keeping up on my favorite blogs. (yours included!)

I noticed in your last couple of posts Gauges SHORT hair! We just cut all of Mylo's off yesterday. (sniff, sniff) I miss his curls already, but he was SWEATING like crazy on Saturday so we decided to give him a short 'do for the summer. It's hard to see all those curls go though, huh?!

  11. I really never understood what google reader was, so guess I'm safe from those pit falls. I've never understood though why anyone takes the time to read and not leave a comment. If you don't leave a comment no one knows you were there. Isn't the whole purpose of blogging back and forth chatting? I also get miffed when people respond to me in private emails instead of reading and commenting. No one blogs with the hope that no one will read or post a comment;;;;;so it just seems silly to me.

I leave lots of comments, feel like I can't expect people to visit me, read me, leave me comments if I don't do the same. So....I'm with ya 100%

I've not yet read or understood what bloher is, can you give me the 1-2-3 of it?

  12. Tried to find you on blog catalog and blogarama so I rate your nice blog; but couldn't find you in either place? I used All you need is love, and life down our lane as your title?

  13. That's funny! I'm exactly the same way! It drives me nuts that you can't leave a comment through "reader". I wonder what your first commenter meant by Firefox brought it back? does Firefox have a "reader", too?
